Footnote Mode

The Emacs footnote mode

Activate the footnote mode in Emacs with M-x footnote-mode RET.

It is a minor mode and it is indicated in the status bar with FN when it is active.

existing footnotes are not recognized: when going to an existing footnote and pressing C-c ! g, the answer is I don't see a footnote here! — respectively, inserting a new footnote starts of with number 1 again and creates a new Footnotes: section at the bottom (below the existing one) —?!

These are the styles available:

The function Footnote-cycle-style allows to change the style used for the current footnote (?!).
The numeric style is not chosen, if you have already created numeric footnotes manually (even when it's the default style).
The emacs-wiki-mode only recognizes the numeric style (other styles are not converted in linked html-footnotes).

Use M-x customize-group RET footnote RET to see (and change) the customizing options.
